How it all started....
It all started with a fun evening with my daughter to a store in Denton, Texas. My daughter/partner in business, wanted to learn how to do chalk painting. So we took a class one evening and learned basicly how to do this "chalk painting" . We had so much fun that night, getting paint everywhere, and trying to decide which piece of furniture we would each paint. She chose a cabinet door and I chose an interesting piece, it was a vintage Men's Valet piece. Rachel thought I was crazy for picking it, but I was thinking of a place to hang my coat in the winter at the office.
We started with picking out the colors we wanted and how we were going to layer the piece to achieve the look we wanted. Then the paint slinging began! I started my piece by painting it black and then I painted off white over the top, but made sure the black showed through too. Since we were in a hurry, she had hair dryers to help dry the paint quicker.
My daughter painted a cute chalkboard with clips on the bottom to hang pictures or artwork for "my" grandaughter! Hers was adorable, as usual, because out of the two of us, she is the artist with a paintbrush!!
From this evening, and the fun we had painting and transforming a piece of furniture, into something we would like to use or put in our home, we decided to start a fun business. It started out small, we went to a couple of garage sales and found a few cool pieces of furniture to play with. Here are some of our first pieces we did...
One of our first pieces was the adorable two-tiered table. I painted it with a chalkboard top, and sanded around the edges to make the scallop design really stand out. I painted the legs and the rest of the table a nice shade of blue. I really liked this piece and sold it to a friend of mine who has a booth in an antique mall. She can write information, or prices on the tabletop for the items she has placed on the table.
We also purchased an old desk taken out of the University of North Texas dorms. It must have been when they were remodeling. This thing was an antique piece itself, with a cool history. I kind of went crazy with the colors, but I so enjoyed trying new painting techniques. This one did sell as well, after I staged it and made it look like a piece of furniture in any home.
I also found this really neat footboard and headboard at an antique place. Actually it was in a junk pile on the side of the store, outside! I offered them $10 and they took it. I had a blast using these two colors together. When it came time to place it for sell, I measured it to make sure that it was a full size, and turns out it was a three fourths size bed, which is between a twin and a full size bed. Since no one has this size matress, I will someday get brave enough to make it into a bench.
Oh, and I never showed the final picture of my very first chalk painting experience.
Thank you for following us, and we hope to post more soon.
Blessings,
Jamie
