Making a cozy home in a crazy world
As I write this, we are on our 9th month of the COVID-19 shutdown, pandemic, or just plain having to stay at home to be safe. I know many of us are so very tired of spending time in our homes, missing seeing our loved ones, or just having a fun gathering of our friends! From what I see, people want to make their home more of a retreat, a peaceful place to relax and restore, and a beautiful place. So I thought I would share with you some of my ideas on making your home a more cozy, and colorful place!
DE-CLUTTER YOUR SPACES
My first suggestion is one that I really need to work on too, so I am preaching to the choir. I know you have all heard this before, and it is the most boring suggestion, but we need to declutter! Yes, now is when we begin to see all of the things we have collected over the years, and there are no more "good" places to put them. I am sitting in my bedroom with 3 dogs on the un-made bed that I am still snug and cozy under the covers. But yes, seriously there are things in my room that are really stressing me out because I have no place to put them. One thing I have is a pile of art supplies that I no longer need because I tried painting real pictures, and this was a complete failure. I will be sticking to painting furniture y'all!
So my suggestion is to only do one room at a time. Set a small goal and achieve it. So I will start in my bedroom, and de-stress and de-clutter! Surely I can find someone with who I can donate my art supplies for Christmas.
COMFY AND COZY FURNITURE
Another great way for your home to be relaxing is the best comfortable furniture, cozy blankets, and your precious fur baby to sit in your lap! I have several comfortable places in my home I like to hang out, and each one of them is uber comfy! I love those cozy couches that you can tuck your legs in and sink right into. And my favorite is these extremely large very best feather bed pillows! Yes, they are why I am sitting on my bed in the middle of the day.
Sadly, some of us have inherited some furniture pieces from our loved ones recently. If it is an upholstered piece, it's a great idea to have a professional to recover it. This is a great way to incorporate it into your home and have something you love to remember someone too!
I can't write this blog without mentioning updating your wood pieces of furniture with a new color! What a better time to update a boring piece and turn it into your best statement piece in your home. Fusion Mineral Paint is a great way to update a small or large piece to give you joy and a smile when you come home. I love color and what a beautifully painted piece can do for your home.
COLLECTIONS
Yes, we did just talk about clutter, but some of these items show our personality and our what we love. These things just have a special meaning to us or a story that goes with each item! These are the items that make your home yours, not a design space! It's not really what you collect, but in finding a fun way to incorporate it into your home design. One trick that my Mother-in-Love taught me was to have these collections separated out into seasons. Each new season, bring out a different box of your treasures and put away the others from the previous season. It is like opening a gift each year to see them again and of course, they might just find a new place to "hang out" than they did last year.
But when it comes down to it, we are wanting to create spaces that we love. We want to create places that make us de-stress from this crazy world, and that we can relax and feel oh so comfortable and cozy. It sounds like it might be a while still so why not get started!
Blessings,
Jamie Orsburn
