How it all started….

It all started with a fun evening with my daughter to a store in Denton, Texas. My daughter/partner in business, wanted to learn how to do chalk painting. So we took a class one evening and learned basicly how to do this “chalk painting” . We had so much fun that night, getting paint everywhere, and trying to decide which piece of furniture we would each paint. She chose a cabinet door and I chose an interesting piece, it was a vintage Men’s Valet piece. Rachel thought I was crazy for picking it, but I was thinking of a place to hang my coat in the winter at the office.

We started with picking out the colors we wanted and how we were going to layer the piece to achieve the look we wanted. Then the paint slinging began! I started my piece by painting it black and then I painted off white over the top, but made sure the black showed through too. Since we were in a hurry, she had hair dryers to help dry the paint quicker.

My daughter painted a cute chalkboard with clips on the bottom to hang pictures or artwork for “my” grandaughter! Hers was adorable, as usual, because out of the two of us, she is the artist with a paintbrush!!

From this evening, and the fun we had painting and transforming a piece of furniture into something we’d love to use or display in our home, we decided to start a fun little business. It started out small—we went to a couple of garage sales and found a few cool pieces of furniture to play with. Here are some of our first creations:

One of our first pieces was an adorable two-tiered table. I painted it with a chalkboard top and sanded around the edges to really make the scallop design stand out. The legs and the rest of the table were painted a lovely shade of blue. I really loved this piece, and it sold to a friend who has a booth in an antique mall. She can write information or prices on the tabletop for the items she displays.

We also purchased an old desk that had been removed from the University of North Texas dorms—likely during a remodel. This antique piece had a fascinating history. I went a little crazy with colors, but I really enjoyed experimenting with new painting techniques. This desk also sold after I staged it to make it feel like a piece that could belong in any home.

I also found a really neat footboard and headboard at an antique shop. Actually, it was in a junk pile outside the store! I offered $10, and they accepted. I had a blast combining these two colors. When it came time to sell it, I measured it to make sure it was a full-size bed—but it turned out to be a three-fourths size bed, which is between a twin and a full. Since no one has a mattress that size, I hope to someday get brave enough to turn it into a bench.

Oh, and I realized I never shared the final picture of my very first chalk painting experience!

Thank you so much for following our journey—we hope to share more creations soon.

Blessings,
Jamie
