Learning from a Master
I had the privilege of attending a class taught by a master of Old World Finishes this past January. Amy Howard studied under artisans in an Italian bodega, learning how to create patinas using traditional, time-honored techniques. These finishes have long been—and continue to be—in high demand among interior designers, furniture collectors, and creative enthusiasts like you and me.
Amy took what she learned and built several successful businesses, with her work featured in numerous magazines over the years.
During the class, about 30 other women and I spent a week learning and creating twelve unique finishes to use on our furniture and art pieces. Amy demonstrated each technique step-by-step, and we then replicated the finishes ourselves—a truly inspiring and hands-on experience!

This is a picture of me with Amy Howard in Memphis. I managed to pull her aside for a quick photo when I didn’t have paint all over me! She was definitely in high demand—everyone wanted her attention. I loved how she took the time to visit each of us as we worked on our finishes, offering a thumbs-up or a bit of extra guidance to help us perfect each technique.

We didn’t have time to finish our project during our short little retreat, so I will have to do a follow-up blog to show what we do to finish up. We have chairs to reupholster, and I found some fabric to do it with later that afternoon. What do you think?

Some of the finishes we learned included Caproni plaster wrap, the Texas Finish, driftwood effects on different types of wood, and even Scandinavian-inspired techniques. The last picture shows just one day’s worth of paintbrushes waiting to be cleaned! I’m used to using the same brush over and over, but we had an endless supply of fresh ones. Bless the wonderful ladies who stayed late each night to clean them for us!
I will forever be grateful for everything I learned during that week. Beyond painting techniques, I gained insight into photography, business strategies, and built a network of creative women who share the same passion. These ladies will be my tribe for years to come.
Blessings from Texas,
